I Shall Vote Yes on May 5
In today's Daily Mirror I set out why, as a longtime supporter of the Alternative Vote, I shall vote Yes in the May 5 referendum. You can read the full column here. The major political parties use AV to pick their leaders. We should use it to elect MPs.

Do the yes camp really expect people to believe that there will be MPs sitting in there office, looking at their watch and going: 'Oh, it's O'Clock, time to clock off. Oh wait! We have AV now, I guess I'll have to spend a couple more hours at work trying to get second 2nd preference votes from BNP voters. Drat it what a blessed inconvenience.' Of course they won't.
And the other lie is that it means MPs will have the support of 50% of the voters NO THEY WON'T!!! They will have the support of maybe 3045% of the voters plus the grudging 'Better you that other w' ifyoumust gun to my head acceptance of a few others. That is NOT support.
First past the post is not a perfect system but it gets it braodly right: In 1992, people liked Labour, but trusted the Tories small Tory majority. In 1997, people wanted Blair and wanted to get rid of the Conservatives Labour landslide. In 2001 the people felt that if it wasn't broken it wasn't worth fixing and virtually no seats changed hands. In 2005, people would, gun to their heads have prefered Blair to Howard and so Labour snuck back in. In 2010, people like the Tories, didn't quite trust them ut certainly didn't want Labour Conservatives have to govern with the Lib Dems. Say what you will, ut it does a good job of delivering strong governments and summing up the mood.
If a respectable alternative like single transferable vote comes up, it would be worth the debate. But Squealer Maguire sums up the Yes campaign in it for nakedly party politcal reasons.
