Midget AAs start first season strong
The MacGregor Midget AAs doubleheader against the Halifax Mets Sunday followed the same pattern the MacGregors' season has.
In the first game the MacGregors lost 65. In the second they won 100. They've had similar scores in the first two doubleheaders they had, losing the first and dominating the second.
The slow starts and strong finishes can probably be attributed to the lack of practice the team has had because of poor weather, coach Barry Hayman believes.
The strong performances in the second games are a good indication of what his team is capable of though. Their pitching is particularly strong and their batting is starting to come alive, he said.
"We're still trying to find our way, but we're starting to gel as a team," he said.
The MacGregors organization added the midget AA team this year as a way to allow more players to compete. They have 10 first year players. The majority of the team is made up of Pictou County boys but they also have a couple from Antigonish, one from Hants North and one from North River.
"I think it's great because now we can develop players to the AAA team next year, air max hommes," Hayman said.
It also prevents the program from losing players between the bantam and midget level. "When they leave for one year chances are they aren't coming back," he said. "It's really good to have it. There's nothing better than keeping kids off the street."
He believes many of them are talented enough to move up next year.
"It wouldn't surprise me if 80 per cent go AAA next year," he said. "I believe I have a very strong team."
This weekend the boys will be travelling to Bedford to compete in a tournament. Games start Friday afternoon.
I do agree baseball is awesome for keeping kids off the street but really disappointed with this program. Unless you can make AA there is no room for you to play ball in this county. All the kids that were cut from this team should have had the ability to try out for A team instead, the A team tryouts ended a week before AA try outs and now there are at least 7 10 kids that can't play ball this summer. Barry's statement should have read "Well for the kids that have skills to play AA and AAA will be kept off the street but as for the rest of them, Best of luck this summer trying to stay away from drugs and alcohol. We know you can do it:"
