Temat postu: Summerside Capitals lose in OT
Summerside Capitals lose in OT
SUMMERSIDE The Surrey Eagles refused to panic while the Summerside Western Capitals proved they can play with one of the best teams in Canada at the 2013 RBC Cup on Monday night.
The Eagles overcame a 42 deficit after two periods, and captain Brett Mulcahy scored at 8:43 of overtime to cap a 54 comefrombehind overtime win before 2,303 appreciative fans at Eastlink Arena.
"It was an upanddown game," said Eagles head coach Matt Erhart. "We had a decent first period, we played probably our worst period of the year in the second and got a little more composed and disciplined and played a better third.
"We felt they were getting tired on the back end, and we wanted to keep pressuring them on the forecheck and we were able to get those tying goals in the third period. The winners in overtime are always kind of greasy goals, and we were telling the guys to throw it to the net. It hits a stick and goes under the bar."
Mulcahy let the gamewinning shot that beat Capitals goaltender Kevin Bailie high on the glove side go from approximately three feet inside the hash marks on the right wing.
"It wasn't a bad shooting angle," said Mulcahy. "It tucked right up under the bar, michael kors paris, and it was a tough save for a goalie and it might have got deflected."
The win improved the Eagles' record to 20 (wonlost) while the Capitals fell to 11.
Meanwhile, Capitals head coach Billy McGuigan was pleased with his team's effort.
"We know we can play with those teams," said McGuigan. "Overall, we thought we played a good game. We wanted our third period to be our best period and tonight it wasn't."
The Capitals opened the scoring on a great individual effort by rightwinger Chris Caissy at 8:24 of the first period. Caissy carried the puck on an endtoend rush, made a nifty move around the Eagles defenceman, cut to the middle of the ice and slid the puck through the legs of Surrey goaltender Michael Santaguida.
The Eagles answered back on the power play at 15:19. After some slick puck movement deep in the Caps' zone, Adam Tambellini made no mistake batting the puck out of the air past Bailie.
The Caps took a 21 lead at 7:51 of the second period, when JP Harvey deflected a hard point shot from Danny Chiasson. Then after the Caps were unable to capitalize on three quality chances, the Eagles' Trevor Cameron cut to the goal off the left wing and beat Bailie up high over his left shoulder to tie the game at 9:47.
The Caps retook the lead with another powerplay goal at 12:55. Mitch Maynard worked his way out to the side of the net from behind the goalline, and from a sharp angle was able to beat Santaguida.
Caissy banged in a loose puck during a scramble at 17:35 to send the Caps into the second intermission with a 42 lead.
The Eagles came out and held a huge territorial edge in the third period, outshooting the Caps 104 and outscoring them 20.
"We started panicking and started throwing pucks up the wall in the defensive zone, and started breaking down a little bit," said McGuigan. "They are a good hockey team.
"We played a good game here as well and it's time to turn the page. This one is over and it's time to move on to the next one."
Devon Toews' powerplay goal at 6:45 of the third period brought the Eagles to within 43. Tambellini, who finished with two assists for a fourpoint night effort, batted the puck out of the air past Bailie on the stick side to tie the game at 15:35.
Tambellini's equalizer came 22 seconds after Santaguida robbed the Capitals' Craig MacLauchlan with a glove save off a onetimer from the centre of the ice between the hash marks. Santaguida also came up with a couple of gamesaving stops in overtime, including one off Chiasson, who was in alone with 16:29 left.
"Michael has been amazing for us this year," said Mulcahy. "He has won a bunch of awards, and it's because of that. He's a timely goaltender and makes the saves that some other goalies would let in. We rely on him a lot and he's extremely important to this team."
