Cardinal Gibbons senior Max Schrock, who led the Triangle area in home runs this past season, was drafted by the Arizona Diamondbacks in the 28th round (873rd) in the 2012 Major League Baseball Draft on Wednesday.
Schrock, a shortstop, was projected by many publications as a top10 round pick, but the senior said he plans on playing his next three years with the University of South Carolina.
Wakefield shortstop Vance Vizcaino, a Tennessee recruit who was named Cap Eight 4A Player of the Year, was drafted by the New York Mets in the 31st round (950th).
One pick later (31st round, 951st) Apex Corey Thompson, a senior third baseman at East Carolina, was taken by the Chicago White Sox. State recruit Matt Tenuta, a lefthanded pitcher from Apex who led the Triangle in strikeouts this season, has already signed with the Kansas City Royals, who selected him in the 25th round (763rd overall). By signing with Kansas City, Matt Tenuta forgoes his college eligibility and should report to the minor leagues within the coming weeks.

Apex girls lacrosse doesn let up in win over Broughton
One of the difficulties of coaching a talented team is keeping them motivated when they are in control of the game. That been the challenge for Apex coach Sarah Fellows at times during the regular season, but Friday playoff game wasn one of them. Apex scored early and often and didn let up, defeating Broughton 209 in the first round of the NCHSAA girls lacrosse tournament.

Millbrook Jackie Stroud was all over the field in last week 32 win over Leesville Road in the regular season finale. She scored the game first goal and her team winning goal as the Wildcats remained undefeated in Cap Eight play. Stroud knows a lot about winning.
